Bridges are meant to take you from one side of a river or a ravine, to the other. They are convenient, but do you consider them beautiful? You will if you saw The Pont Alexandre III, which is considered to be the most beautiful – and the most romantic — bridge in the world. Located in Paris, it connects the Petit Palais, the Grand Palais and the Champs-Elysées with the Hôtel des Invalides, the final resting place of Napoléon Bonaparte.

The history of The Pont Alexandre III dates back to the 1900 World Fair, which took place on both sides of the River Seine. The bridge, one of 37 that Paris now has, was then built to allow the visitors to cross the river and attend both sides of the World Fair. It was also built to celebrate the Franco-Russian Alliance.

But The Pont Alexandre III wasn’t just built as a boring concrete structure, which we often see in many of the United States. It was built so beautifully and adorned with so many amazing sculptures and statues – including four Fames that each stand for a piece of France history – as well as ornaments and monuments. When you’re walking on the bridge you’ll see an array of sculptures of lions, cherubs, nymphs, maidens, cupids, water spirits, fish, scalloped seashells, and sea monsters.

This special bridge is as beautiful a site to see and admire in Paris as the famed Eiffel Tower is, so if you’re in France, you have to walk across the Pont Alexandre III bridge, especially to admire the breathtaking view. It’s this view that make it one of the romantic places in Paris.

Think about holding your loved one’s hands and kissing him or her on such an exquisite structure while looking out over the River Seine – how romantic is that?

The Bridge – which is also the largest and lowest bridge of Paris — was used in many movies and music videos, including Anastasia (1956); French Postcards (1979); A View to a Kill (1985); Ronin (1988); A Very Long Engagement (2005); Mariah Carey’s video for “Say Somethin'”; Midnight in Paris (2011); and Adele’s music video for the song “Someone Like You” (2011).
