Olympic Cities to visit post Olympics

Olympic Cities to visit post Olympics

This coming February, 2018 the Winter Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. If you’re a fan of these amateur athletic competitions, then why not plan a trip and go see where some of the previous Olympics were held.

Lake Placid, New York: The Winter Olympics were held here twice. First in 1932 and again in 1980. If you’re old enough to remember the hockey game between the USA and the USSR teams, which was nicknamed Miracle on Ice, it took place here. The cool thing about this city is that the Olympics just keep living on. Immerse yourself in the Olympic history at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum where you’ll be in the same building as the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey game, appropriately named the Herb Brooks Arena after the coach of the hockey team. Tour the Olympic Jumping Complex, where you’ll get an up-close and personal tour of the ramps that the ski jumpers used to launch themselves. If you want the experience of being an Olympian to be a little more realistic, you can enjoy your own bobsled experience too. Finally, finish out your winter vacation with a little skiing of your own at the Nordic Terrain Park, which is for all levels of skiers.

Athens, Greece: Go back in time to the first Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1986. Athens also hosted the summer Olympic Games in both 1906 and 2004 as well as the Special Olympics in 2011. Here you can tour the Panathenaic Stadium where you’ll have the right to run on the track, see the permanent exhibition “Memories from Olympic Games: Posters and Torches from 1896 till today” and watch highlights of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Talk about going back in time!

London, England: London’s history is extensive because they have hosted the Olympics three times – in 1908, 1948 and 2012. During your visit, you should first tour Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Tower of London. Afterwards, turn your attention to the Olympics and check out Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the sporting complex that was built for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is free to visit every day and should be on your list of must-sees.
